The identity of the Catholic Pangkal Pinang Diocese

The people of God in Pangkalpinang diocese, inspired by the Holy Trinity, are bent to be a Participatory Church.

Building an ecclesial, dialogical, ecclesiastical Community rooted in the faith and teachings of the Church, caring for the environment, prophetic, siding with the poor, transformative, kinship and empowering.

Discipleship and Servant of God.

Participatory Church

The Pangkal Pinang diocese have chosen to portray their identity as a "Participatory Church", to emphasize the calling of all its members, priests, laity and religious to "be" with Christ, unite with Him thanks to the Sacrament of Baptism. The union of the members of the Church with Christ gave birth to a new "family", so as to create a fellowship and brotherhood among the members of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, the People of God in the Pangkal Pinang Diocese. In that unit all members are part of it. At the same time all members take part in building a brotherhood based on faith, hope and love. And in this way of life God's people proclaim God's Kingdom to the world. This is the identity of the Pangkalpinang Diocese Church.

In short, by describing themselves as a Participatory Church, the People of God of Pangkalpinang diocese revealed that (1) they were part of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Body of Christ, because they participated in the life and mission of Christ; (2) participation in the life of Christ makes all members of the Pangkal Pinang Diocese a family in which all members "take part" in the grief and anxiety, anguish and joy of their members; (3) and finally, sent to build a family based on love, peace and justice both among members of the Church and with all humanity.

The Second Vatican Council revealed, that "the whole Church appears to be a united people based on the unity of the Father and Son and Holy Spirit." The Church, but expressly reveals that the mystery of the Triune God is an icon of living together in the ecclesiastical community on pilgrimage in this world. This Participatory Church Model is essentially a form of the People of God and the Body of Christ formed, built and sacramental because and on the basis of the fellowship of the life and work of the Holy Trinity. Because of baptism, all who participated were united with the life and mission of Jesus Christ that had been started by the Father and confirmed by His Holy Spirit in the history of mankind. Participation and experience of oneness with Christ gives birth to the unity of each person with fellow members of God's people and with all humans created as images of God. In fellowship as the Body of Christ, every believer and ecclesial communities are sent to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God.

Understanding Ecclesiastical Community

The identity and way of life of the Triune God who is the model of the Participatory Church confirms that the Church in the world must demonstrate this way of life. Thus the People of God in Pangkalpinang Diocese are a sacramental people, people who are called to be a sign and means of God's presence in the world; people who by their way of life and testimony make anyone and anything experience the inclusion of God (a God is with us people). This identity and way of life has been demonstrated by the early Church and experienced by people in his day, so that every day there is an increase in the number of people.

The consequences of this Church's identity are as follows:

  • A Catholic must respect God in every of His creations;
  • A Catholic must believe that God has and always shows His love in various ways and specifically by sending His Son Jesus Christ
  • A Catholic must follow Jesus in the apostolic tradition and the Early Church and share Jesus' divine life with others
  • A Catholic must enter the community of faith in the Church and bear witness of this faith in the activities of the life of faith
  • A Catholic must affirm to himself, that Jesus is manifestly present in the Church: past, present and future, through the sacraments. The sacrament here has a double meaning, namely for the sake of personal salvation and to make a person a sacrament of salvation for the Church community.

The question is what way of life of faith, which needs to be built, so that every member of the Catholic Church, without exception, lives the identity of such a believer in his life as a Church? The Bishops of Asia, in their final statement at the FABC meeting, Bandung, 1990, stressed that there needed to be a new way of life in church (A New Way of Being Church). The new way of living in church is called the Ecclesiastical Community (TEC) or in Indonesia Called Komunitas Basis Gereja (KBG).
